Overview
The Ad Builder is an innovative application that revolutionized the process of creating premium ad formats at our company. As the project lead, I conceptualized, designed, and prototyped this tool, which has significantly streamlined ad creation efficiency and empowered non-engineering staff to contribute directly to the ad development process.

The Challenge
Our team faced several challenges in the ad creation process:
- Developing premium ad formats was manual and time-consuming
- The process required significant design and engineering resources
- Extended build and QA times led to inefficiencies
- Reliance on costly third-party vendors for certain ad formats
These challenges resulted in slower delivery times, increased costs, and limited the engineering team's ability to focus on innovation and new product development.
The Solution
Inspired by an internal tool used for creating site templates at The Washington Post, I developed the Ad Builder application. The tool aims to:
- Enable non-engineers to build and customize premium ad formats
- Streamline the ad creation process
- Reduce reliance on engineering resources for routine ad creation
- Interface directly with our ad server to traffic ads on the website
- Eliminate the need for costly third-party vendors
My Role
As the project lead, I was responsible for:
- Conceptualizing the Ad Builder application
- Creating initial wireframes and digital mockups
- Developing the prototype using React
- Leading the expanded team as the project evolved
- Overseeing the addition of new features and improvements
The Process
1. Research and Conceptualization
I began by:
- Analyzing the existing ad creation process to identify pain points
- Researching similar tools, including the site template builder at The Washington Post
- Defining the core features needed to address our team's challenges
2. Design
The design phase included:
- Sketching initial wireframes on paper to quickly iterate on ideas
- Creating detailed digital mockups to refine the user interface
- Designing a user-friendly interface that non-engineers could easily navigate

3. Prototyping
I took a hands-on approach to prototyping:
- Built the initial prototype directly using React
- Focused on creating a functional, intuitive user experience
- Iterated based on feedback from potential users within our team

4. Development and Expansion
As the project gained traction:
- Expanded the team to include more engineers and a designer
- Continuously improved and enhanced the application based on user feedback
- Added new features, including direct integration with our ad server

Key Features
- User-Friendly Interface: Intuitive design allowing non-engineers to create ads
- Customizable Templates: A range of premium ad format templates to choose from
- Real-Time Preview: Instant visualization of ad changes during the creation process
- Ad Server Integration: Direct trafficking of ads to our website
- Version Control: Ability to save and manage multiple versions of ad projects
Outcome and Impact
The Ad Builder application had a significant positive impact on our operations:
- Streamlined the ad creation process, increasing overall efficiency
- Empowered non-engineering staff to contribute directly to ad development
- Reduced delivery times, leading to higher client satisfaction
- Freed up the engineering team to focus on innovation and product development
- Eliminated reliance on costly third-party vendors
- Consistently generated over $40 million in revenue year over year
Lessons Learned
- Empowering Users: Providing tools that empower non-technical users can significantly boost productivity and innovation.
- Iterative Development: Starting with a prototype and continuously improving based on feedback led to a more useful and user-friendly final product.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Expanding the team to include diverse skills enhanced the application's capabilities and user experience.
- Direct Impact on Revenue: Tools that streamline core business processes can have a substantial impact on the bottom line.
Reflections and Next Steps
Moving forward, potential enhancements to the Ad Builder could include:
- Implementing machine learning to suggest optimal ad layouts based on performance data
- Expanding the range of customizable templates
- Developing a mobile version for on-the-go ad creation and management
- Integrating with additional ad servers and platforms to increase versatility
This project demonstrated the power of innovative internal tools to transform business processes, improve efficiency, and directly impact revenue. It showcased my ability to identify operational challenges, conceptualize solutions, and lead the development of impactful applications.
